Mitt's tax returns, which he was so reluctant to publish before it became a campaign issue, and which he put out in the middle of the night, reveal that he paid 15% on a $45 million income. That's leaving aside whatever he's got shunted away in offshore accounts out of the taxman's sight.
The U.K. basic rate of income tax is 20%, rising to 50% for the very top wage earners. Of course, big multinationals and top earners don't really pay that, as they use all sorts of avoidance schemes, and if they do get caught, they can always
take the taxman out to an expensive lunch and arrange a token repayment scheme.
It doesn't bear thinking that a rich vulture capitalist like Romney will become President in the current climate. He's definitely in the 1% who are screwing the rest of us.
If you live in the UK, don't forget to file your tax return by 31 January. Unless you can afford to take HMRC head David Hartnett out to lunch. (If you can, quick, he's retiring soon. Not sure why he's not behind bars, though.)
