Best Performances PART 1: Song To Woody 1 Year, 2 Months ago
Hey,

i would like to start a new series of threads. I got this idea with this new dylan compilation coming up. there was a discussion here about why columbia didn't release some kind of "best of live" album.
So, i figured, why don't we make it ourselves.

The intention of the series of threads is that we, based on the 3 disc compilation tracklist, try to make a compilation of the best dylan songs but performed live.
I suggest that we sorta stick to tracklist of the official disc because is't supposed to be fanbased.

These threads will go something like this:
I make the first post and add a couple of versions of the songs which i like. Offcourse i don't own every live version of every song so everybody can respond to this with another performance.
After a week or so we wrap it up and we try to decide what performance is the best!
Then we move on to the next song!

The only thing i would like to ask you as that you don't go posting 10 nearly identical versions...

So, the first song: Song To Woody: Song to woody is supposed to be the first song dylan ever wrote. he has only performed this song 51 times during his career, peaking in 1990 (10) and 2000 (18). The last performance to date was in 2002.

The first performance i'm promoting is from march, 16, 2000 in Santa Cruz: http://www.sendspace.com/file/raeata

The second version has dylan solo on acoustic guitar and harp on feb,2,1990 in london:http://www.sendspace.com/file/g8qqqt

We currently lack early recordings from 1961 (performed twice), from 1974 and from the eighties.
So if anybody has these and if they can compete with the above, please upload them here.

The three performances from 1999 are better than any that came after them.

Could this be one of those?
it's from 1999-11-13 in East Rutherford:

Yep. Actually, the other two from 1999 are even better. I can't post them, but maybe someone else will.

What a great idea, Thomas!

here's the only circulating live-version from the 60ies, as far as I know: http://www.tigergames.ch/mp3s/dylan/Bob%20Dylan%20-%20Song%20To%20Woody%20(live%201961%20New%20York%201st%20Gaslight%20Tape).mp3

Personally I like the version from the Carnegie Chapter Hall concert from Nov. 4, '61 better, but although Columbia has it and you could listen to it at the Bob Dylan exhibition in Seattle, it is not in general circulation. Otherwise I'd clearly vote for that one.

I have the solo-version from the Bobfest as pretty good in memory, don't have it ready at the moment, though.

The '99 version is indeed very nice !
But I also just like the spirit of the early-NET accoustic songs. And this London version here has nice harmonica.

Well, if I remember right the exhibition has moved now (wasn't it supposed to come to Europe somewhere?). But a taperecorder wouldn't be enoug, I'm afraid, as there was just a headphone coming out of the wall. And when I was there in 05 I actually asked them if there wasn any possibility to get (buy?) a copy of that recording, but of course there wasn't.

Yeah, if someone could post the Bobfest version, that would be nice.

What recording do you want?

Song to Woody was the first song Bobby wrote? Don't let Brigette Bardot hear.

Well I'd like to nominate the version from 2001 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. That was a special show with the first ever "Highwater" and the panties overboard up on the stage. At any rate, that "Song to Woody" was a highlight for me that night and a very rare treat.

Can you (or anybody else) post an mp3 of this?

so, we're currently still looking for:
* Recordings of 1961 in mp3
* other recordings from 1999
* the 2001 version from staples center in LA

Sorry if my link didn't work for everyone. Maybe I should pick a shorter filename without the spaces in it next time.

Post edited by: Bob T. Guevara, at: 2007/09/06 23:42

i'm gonna bump this thread up a bit.

Can we start voting for the best Song To Woody?

I'm voting for the 61 version Bob T Guevara posted.
it's very intimate and if fits perfectly with the intention of the song.
In this version you can truly hear a young boy dreaming of traveling the world and spreading the music.

I vote for the 1961 Song To Woody...faboulus version!

(my favourite version from the NET is from Saramento, 10-Oct-2001. Unfortunately I donīt have an mp3 of this. But I think this performance is also very intimate).

Thanks for this thread admin. Good idea. Letīs make the best out of this boring Greatest Hit Compilation.
