i'm on bobdylan.com list, i didn't get the link. weird. i only mentioned the unofficial possibility because there is another video out there referred to as the 'official' video. the one with black and white still pictures. still if bobdylan.com is promoting it. that seals it.

Here it is. Just what every subscriber to bobdylan.com wants, right? Unsolicited violent images sent to their email........

In this lively and interesting discussion there is one phrase that stands out to me, coming - this time - from the "how could Bob...?" camp. Here we go:

'Any metaphors and meanings "fans" might unlock from viewing this video are rendered completely meaningless in the face of the innocent who might see it by chance. Think about it.'

I've seen sentiments like that - from the quotation marks around "fans", to the fatuous "think about it" - on many occasions. They usually occur at points in history when things are about to turn out badly for freedom of speech or expression.

But this is just an internet forum so it doesn't really matter.

Look, Derek, there will always be right and wrong. In as much as "art" needs mutable, neutral ground to uninhibitedly flourish, "truth" must always supercede form. For art to be "good", it must do good. Violence is not art.

joe e, having been a "fan" of Bob Dylan for quite some time, I've always enjoyed the moral of the story; the justice. The woman gets away, she kisses him, maybe she could have run him over with the car. Whatever. This video has nothing to do with Bob Dylan's songs. This video, in and of itself, exists as an unregulated and unnecessary series of violent images. It also happened to be emailed to people, with the content completely unbeknownsed to its recipients. That's wrong. The "video" should be R rated. It's a shame it's attached to one of Bob Dylan's songs. It's a horrible shame.

This "music video" and the songs aren't comparable. The songs aren't images. You don't get it.

More statements that seem philisophically troubling:

Let's consider that second quote for a moment. 'For art to be "good", it must do good.' Would anyone care to defend it? It seems like a pretty dubious definition of good art. And exactly what good is this so-called good art supposed to do?

And - my god! - there are those quotation marks around the first "good". What the hell does that mean? Perhaps a real "fan" could tell me.

And let's not even get started on '"truth" must always supercede form.'...
