I have a Dylan/Dylan related record collection that runs into the thousands, but official
releases (ie : 21 different editions/pressings of Highway 61 alone, on LP & CD).
Actual bootlegs = zero
Home burned CD-R's = zero
MP3's = 8 (Dylan tracks offially only available as downloads)
respectfully curious....have you heard some of the boots out there and eschew them on principle, or do you just not count them as part of 'the' collection? I got a mexican 45 with LARS on it....i bet you do too!
I used to own around 500 vinyl boot LP's (not all Dylan) that I collected between 1969 (beginning with the original GWW) and 1985, around the time when CD's first appeared.
Most of them where so cheaply produced that the thin layer containing the grooves started to crack. I got rid of them all. Haven't bought a boot since.
I've found that I can't collect 'everything'. There are some studio outtakes/alternate takes that I would like to see officially released, thus becoming part of the canon.
As for live audience recordings, I just have no interest. I don't need 20,000 live concert recordings (bad, good, indifferent) that I will never listen to.
I realize that others like to collect such recordings, and that's fine, no problem by me.
