The Organ in 2008 9 Months ago
I never minded the organ - rather liked it, in fact. But it certainly seems to be working better this year than it has the past couple of them. Is it a slightly different timbre? Is it simply mixed better? Is Bob starting to benefit from regular practice? My general impression is that it's being used as a more integral part of the arrangements this year than I remember it being before - not just being played on top of the arrangements. Any other thoughts?

Well, I think at first, Bob mostly just played the exactly same on the organ as he did before on the piano.
New arrangements usually worked better with the organ.

I agree. Wasn't sure if it was my imagination but my impression is that its connecting and mixing much more naturally with the music surrounding it. The blend seems better and the organ that bit less invasive. The mixing seemed to vary from gig to gig since its introduction. When it was high, it threatened to be unbearable (Amsterdam last year for example) but this year, from the boots at least, it seems to be consistently that bit lower and its blending better as a result. And I do think Bob is playing it a little better too. Now all this should not be read as an endorsement of the thing. I still prefer the piano. But it might just be the best use of the organ since its introduction in 06

Check out the latter half of Honest With Me from Cardoba. Is that the organ doing that repeating descending spooky hypnotic riff? If it is, it works.

Part of this and especially the change in timbre has to do with Dylan switching to a Leslie speaker at some point last year, which makes it sound well more like an organ.

Did you hear about the streaker that ran across the stage in Zacatecas?

They caught him by the organ... Ba-da-bish!

I agree, however, this year I have started to mind it, especially when he smashes his hands into its keys at completely inappropriate times (I had examples, all of which seem to be eluding me at the moment)

I would think any song that he played the casio on "organ" sound would do. Don't try too hard to think of the best example.

Haha, well, I just to really like it on Stuck Inside and some of the others where the original record included organ, gave it a "fuller" sound.......but now he's playing stupid little diddys that trivialize the song.......and he plays them when Denny is soloing, or where its otherwise extremely noticable, and thats been getting on my nerves lately

Well, he did that with the piano too. And the way I see it that's the point where he really starts to enjoy it and short after will improve his playing. At least that's what I think happened with the piano before he switched to organ.

Henry Brant, the Pulitzer Prize composer (2002)
who was known for spatial effects, improvised
on the organ.
