IT BEGAN IN THE CHURCH: Black Gospel Music Thread 4 Years, 10 Months ago
.
Hi, everybody. Just wanting to get a thread rolling for both YouTube and mp3 contributions of black gospel music.

The purpose of the thread is to document some of the great gospel recordings, beginning in the 1920s, and on up into the 1960s.

Anyone is welcome to post, but I'd ask that you do what you can to keep the focus on the earlier decades. By the time of the 1960's, gospel's golden age had passed.

That said, I suppose it would be more appropriate if I heeded my own direction. The following entry is a 1966 Newport Folk Festival performance by The Dixie Hummingbirds, who had a late '50s hit with "Christian Automobile."

I chose this one for two reasons:

- firstly, Bob played the original recording on TTR.

- secondly, these guy R O C K! Check out the pronunciation of "midnight" at 2:20. The 'birds start out as being nothing out of the ordinary, here, but stay with it. It gets better as it goes, and you won't be disappointed.

"Christian Automobile," by The Dixie Hummingbirds

Just one last request: keep the focus on quality over quantity. Thanks, everybody.

"Honey In The Rock," by Blind Mamie Forehand, 1927

Some nice slide guitar, here, with bells. Very bluesy. Decent sound.

"Wade In The Water," by The Charioteers

This group was known as a jubilee quartet, as was The Golden Gate Quartet. These quartets were known for a smoother version of gospel. This is probably from the early to mid-1940s:

That's it, for now.

Great thread, Warren - looking forward to some gems!

Washington Phillips - What Are They Doing in Heaven Today?
http://www.sendspace.com/file/f9hhlf

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washington_Phillips

Washington Phillips was a pioneering gospel performer in the 1920s. Born January 11, 1880 in Texas, Phillips has recorded sixteen remarkable songs, some of which amount to highly specific and detailed gospel sermons. The songs, recorded between 1927 and 1929, feature Phillips' voice self-accompanied by an instrument that sounds like a fretless zither. This instrument, which has been variously identified as a Dolceola, a Celestophone, and a Phonoharp (and also is considered by some to be an instrument entirely home-made by Phillips) creates a unique sound on these recordings that makes them immediately recognizable. Phillips died September 20, 1954 in Teague, Texas, at the age of 74.

Post edited by: 4th Time Around, at: 2007/06/28 22:23

Tks, 4th. Here's what is arguably Phillips' gem:

"Denomination Blues, Part 1," by Washington Phillips:

Great thread, Warren! I can't wait until i get home and can give all this stuff a good listen. This genre is seriously lacking in my collection, and this thread will give me some nice ideas on where to begin.

If you haven't discovered the Internet Archive, it is a great source for older music. I check things out now and then when I'm bored. Usual the songs are available in lossy MP3 format and also lossless FLAC, etc.

Here is a link to a selection by Blind Willie Johnson, If I Had My Way I'd Tear The Building Down (December 3, 1927)

They are definitely white, 4th. I'd prefer to keep the thread black, black, black. Like this:

"Jesus Brought Me," from AU, 1952, by The Spirit of Memphis Quartet

Great singing and sound.

P. S. NHP, that's a great site for a lot of different material. Thanks for jogging my memory.

Of course the Dixie Hummingbirds cover a song of Dylan's. Larry Campbell, Levon Helm and Garth Hudson have worked with them.

Tons of stuff to come.

A rare instance of a harmonica being used in a gospel song. This is the spookiest-sounding gospel song that my ears have heard. Cut through with the blues:

Thank you very much for this thread, Warren.

The earliest Gospel recordings of Thomas A. Dorsey, great and influential composer, who wrote for example "Peace In The Valley":
