Re:Uh oh 1 Year, 1 Month ago
not sure what your 'uh oh' indicates dread of...but this development could be viewed as yet another example of the corporate aspect of the artist (their corporate employers, that is) co-opting more and more 'cyber' space with things that have been proven to be marketable, or useful in marketing. (in this case, online 'community' in the form of a message forum)

I have watched with great interest, along with many of you, as this dylan ommunity has taken its many forms over the past decade, and survived. Survived change in the internet, most notably! Think of all those times when we were a free-floating, pre-existing 'market' or if you prefer 'community' waiting for an effective forum to join.

The forums come and go (no slight meant to this forum or previous ones), but the 'community' is what is made of it.

To take this rant down a darker alley,

What if these corporations are just setting up the vehicle for suckers like me to join and be monitored,& targetted for marketing...am I being harmed? or just herded?

What if this forum is used by these corporations to moniter for breaches of 'intellectual property' such as the 'peer-to-peer networks' referred to in the following article about another (separate) dark development in the evolution of the internet, and the growing corporate interest in it: http://harpmagazine.com/news/detail.cfm?article=11705
"One possible scenario: lyrics and tablature sites go underground (underweb?) and become the domain of peer-to-peer networks"

Soon..there may be no 'underground'.
Just a dark thought.
(i've had these thoughts since the mid-nineties, however, so who knows)

I say Uh oh, somewhat sarcastically, after all that went down at the old bd.com discussion site.

Flowr, I've noticed a shift in Dylan's marketing strategy this past year, especially with the release of Dylan07. They seem to be trying to get fans more directly involved. From hot seats, to making DYlan07 track list a vote, to the Dylan07 site that includes fan's Dylan photos and Dylan stories. I think bringing back the internet forum is part of this marketing scheme.

Bob and his people are certainly rolling along with modern times as far as promotion is concerned.

Corporate America - for lack of a better term - just doesn't "get it". Starting a web board or asking people to "join the social" to promote a brand or give the impression that corporate suits are hip to trends, is like trying to raise pandas in captivity. It just isn't going to meet with much success. They would be better off trying to preserve the panda's natural environment, so to speak. However, they would rather see what's going on in the wider world be happening in a controlled environment that they can profit from with their old fangled ideas.

They just look at the wild success of Google, MySpace, and wikipedia, and they scratch their heads.

Apple gets it to an extent. Very quietly, they have made a soundboard recording of Highwater from a Niagara, Ontario show - presumably from 2003 - available at the iTunes Store. Whether they are testing the waters for offering more soundboard stuff, or something else, I don't know. Obviously Sony and Bob have to have something to do with this, but whose idea was it?

The site that lets you put your own message on the cards on the Subterranean Homesick Blues video was genius, but it's kind of a one-off.

That depends on what you consider flattering, justin.
