It turned out to be a rather long story (and Mr. Dylan's part is very small), but maybe some here will enjoy this kind of historical research.
Please feel free to comment. And if someone here maybe has a copy of the songbook "100 WLS National Barn Dance Favorites", published in 1935 or has a recording of "Mary" by a Bluegrass outfit called the "Bailey Brothers" (I have no date, could be 30s, 40s or 50s) at hand, please let me know.
