The Adventurous Story Of Poor "Mary Of The Wild Moor"
http://www.morerootsofbob.com/Ballads/Mary/mary.html

It turned out to be a rather long story (and Mr. Dylan's part is very small), but maybe some here will enjoy this kind of historical research.
Please feel free to comment. And if someone here maybe has a copy of the songbook "100 WLS National Barn Dance Favorites", published in 1935 or has a recording of "Mary" by a Bluegrass outfit called the "Bailey Brothers" (I have no date, could be 30s, 40s or 50s) at hand, please let me know.

2 mp3s:
The Louvin Brothers, "Mary Of The Wild Moor" (1956)
http://www.sendspace.com/file/1uyky0

Bob Dylan, "Mary From The Wild Moor", San Francisco, 12.11.1980
http://www.sendspace.com/file/85aqfo

Thanks, as always, to Stew for support.

And many thanks for starting this forum!

Yes, hillbilly-music.com is a fine site with lots of information.

This Linda Parker obviously was rather influential with her Folk-song performances over the radio, although she had a very short career and died already in 1935. Another song included in that WLS Barn Dance songbook that may have been performed by her on the radio a couple of years before Bob was born was "Gentle Nettie Moore".

By the way, another great site with lots of old-time country & more is http://www.juneberry78s.com/sounds/index.htm

Bob's part is "pretty small". We gonna measure this?

How did you come to know this song?

Well, apart from other possible sources, Bob Dylan performed it 16 times in 1980/81.

That wasn't meant in any way derogative.
