We need a bootleg-rating-system! 1 Month ago
I usually try to hear as many shows a year as possible but
I canīt listen to them all.
There are a lot people outthere who canīt listen to every show
or just want to know which five recordings a year are worth downloading.
What about a simple rating system for Dylan-concert-recordings.
We could give one to five out of five stars (like RS-magazine)
and add a short comment.

For example:

Show: Halifax
Taper: ----

performance: ***** Stars
recording: ***** Stars

Comments:

Every Show/Recording of a show which appears should be rated...it would make many things easier.
What do you think about that?

I have my own rating system that gets put on the front of white sleeve. I give a letter grade to sound quality and performance. The back of the sleeve is the setlist, and the performances I especially prefer, (if at all) get little * next to the them.

To answer your post, yes, there should be 'something' on these sites for down loaders.

I just wish I kept track of my boots genealogy and technical hoopla a little better when I started.

great idea mr hibbing, also i said in a thread a while back, you may have a bootleg but you don't know if it's the best quality boot of the show available,so m aybe you could also note something like, crowd talking during track 6 or something? just an idea.

total time on disc one?
et.al.

I think there was a site a few years back that really covered all the above, but I can't recall the web address.

I vaguely remember the layout...you click on a date, a track listing pops up with the time of each song and disc. Black and white/grey color scheme. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

For sound quality it's often useful to check with LosslessBob:

There were a couple fan efforts that did something along the lines being discussed in this thread that I recall. It appears that neither are still active.

One was called CEDAR (Catalogue of Extant Dylan Audio Recordings). The old link, now points to www.cedarproject.org but does not seem to have any of the old info in it. By my recollection, this project had very thoroughly detailed all known recordings for several tours, maybe even a couple years worth. They were big on identifying "marks" - like 13 seconds into track four "Down Along The Cove", man's voice shouts out, "Bob is king!". When there were multiple tapers, they mentioned each one...

The other is Dylanbase. This still exists at www.dylanbase.com, but does not seem to have been updated since September 2007. Although this database does not attempt to rate or rank individual boots - it does catalog Dylan shows and tracklists very well.

The best way to build a database like that is to let users actually manage the data.
i think it's impossible for one men to keep everything up to date through the years. That's probably why other projects like cedar have ceased to exist.

we might as well put this on our todo list
