Re:Live Setlist: Bloomington - 2nd Tom Waits Cover 2 Years, 3 Months ago
One my biggest concert going regrets was skipping a chance to go see Tom Waits perform a show here in my home state because it was slightly more expensive than would have been ideal at the time. Now whenever the chance finally comes around again I'll probably not only have to pay at least as much but also drive twice as far for the opportunity.

Due to the timing of the text messages, I can almost guarantee you it was 1 verse - though I have not asked our person in the field. I tend to not bother the texter with questions during the show.

Oh man! That is a pretty big mistake, hehe. What year was it? One of the recent tours?

I think it was in early 2006. It was the tour where he hit all the unusual cities instead of the expected major ones, joking at the tour announcement that they were gonna head down through Indiana so they could pick up some firecrackers and then continue on down into Kentucky because some guy owed him money. The Louisville show was the one I skipped on. I know he's done at least one more trip out since then and it had a hilarious "press conference" to announce it as well but can't recall the closest it came to me that time.

Ah yes. I hit up 2 shows in 2006. We actually did 4 concerts in 3 days that weekend... Waits in Detroit on Friday, Dylan in Grand Rapids on Saturday, Dylan in Columbus, OH, on Sunday (Eric Clapton showed up to play with Jimmie Vaughn), then we had to high tail it to Cleveland, OH (where I'm from) for Tom Waits at Midnight the same day as the Dylan show... good times! All the shows were great, as was the Glitter and Doom tour. Tom is releasing a live CD of Glitter and Doom - so at least you have that to fall back on. I don't recommend skipping him again, though

What an insane weekend! I certainly don't intend to let the chance pass me by again. Were all the G&D shows at midnight or how did that turn out to be the case?

I've gotta run out of here. I've enjoyed following the show with you tonight and will check in how it finishes up when I get in later. Thanks for making this happen and thanks to the attendee as well. I'm also particularly envious of baby blue with guitar no less; a song I've never seen played personally in 10 shows attended spanning 8 years. Take it easy.

The midnight show was a 1-off and was in 2006, not a part of the G&D tour (which was 2008 I guess... I get my years confused after so many sierra nevada... hey, I can't drink at the show, at least I can drink doing the live setlist!) Story played out like this: We had the 3 regular shows booked for the weekend (minus the midnight show in Cleveland.) It's a week before we're supposed to leave for the shows, and Tom Waits announces the midnight show in Cleveland - which was just a few hours after his show that night in Akron, OH. As soon as we heard about the midnight show we just said F it, bought tickets, and a radar detector and figured we'd leave Dylan a little early. The midnight show was at the House of Blues - much smaller a venue than anywhere else TW had been performing. It was awesome - it didn't end up starting til after 1AM. The monkey wrench in the whole thing was Eric Clapton showing up in Columbus (his wife's family lives in Ohio) - we planned to leave during Dylan's encore to beat the traffic but hesitated because we weren't sure if Clapton would come out and play with Bob. We ended up walking out during Watchtower - Clapton never came out, then got stopped by Bob's bus, which we followed (unintentionally) on the freeway for awhile. Then I sped like a madman all the way to Cleveland for the Waits show. Good times.
