I suspect this has been asked before.......but does anyone know if the 3 disc version will be released (at some point) at a reasonable price?

I suggest getting it off the Net and proudly saying you're planning on doing just that. Buy the 2CD set, but download the bonus disc. Sony will crap their pants when we're all in agreement about downloading it and they won't be able to pay staff enough money to stop us either. They need reminding that, in this day and age, the retailer is no longer the "man" in the relationship, if you get what I mean.

Thanks for the replies - I'm definitely not buying it - don't think I'm going to bother buying the two disc version either as this really has pi**ed me off! I've bought just about everything over the years, but this really sticks in my throat.

Same here, I will be downloading the whole thing off the net, I am not buying the 2cd set due to the fact it is incomplete without the third disk, I will buy the 2cd set after a couple of years when it will be cheap on Play.com or somewhere like that.

Its like walking into a grocery store and the grocer says to you I can give you one apple for 3 cents but if you want a dozen its gonna cost you 10 dollars

No, it's more like the grocer saying if you want that apple you also to buy this picture of an apple for a hundred dollars.

It could be a major marketing blunder on Sony's part-if the lead in to every review, instead of saying "what a great collection of music" is going to focus on this shameful money grubbing gambit, it might hurt sales.

You're right, that is more accurate

I found the apple/apples analogy much more accurate if you are discussing the music on the 3rd CD.

I am curious whether Sony has created a self fulfilling prophecy - if they lose sales because people download it from free sources, then they can blame it on those people they once called fans, but now call thieves.

This isn't just with the regular CD, but the vinyl edition as well, which is missing the additional 12 tracks. That pisses me off more because they are charging $99 for it. Without the singles book - but I consider that a bonus.
